I am not a movie buff.I am not the one who has his attendances on one of the city theaters over the weekends. But I am a guy who votes for good movies. One such is Madarasapattinam. Yes, the film speaks of some true love years back in our own "Namma Madras". The film visualizes a pre - independent India and the story of a love is intertwined it. As director Vijay says, "It is not an historical film speaking of freedom struggle, but a love story in British days".
Arya, who proved his mettle with 'Naan Kadavul' has lived upto the role. Amy Jackson is a surprise wonder in this film. This girl will have great film career if she chooses right films. The height of love is felt when she tells "Marandittiya?", in response to Arya's failing english attempts. When Tamil film industry is rapidly marching towards Hollywood format of romances, making understand the importance of "Thaali" by an English girl is an welcome change.
Old Madras is beautiful, thanks to a realistic art direction by Selva Kumar. Instances of freedom struggle and cunning behavior of Governor and his assistant have been included at regular intervals that makes the film more gripping. The scene where freedom fighters were allowed to run for life and english men shoot them like hunting birds is height of misery and it slightly resembles Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919.
The old lady who comes to India in search of old love is simply wonderful in emoting reactions by underplaying. Though it reminds me of Titanic movie, yet her acting is afresh.
Who told comedy and comic tracks cannot find a place in these kind of movies? There are not comedy tracks that splits you to laughs but there is a subtle humor which is endearing.
The song "Pookal Pookum Tharunum" has excellent lyrics. "Vamma Duraiyamma" is equally good. Especially when Arya sings" Veera mannargal Valzhnda naadu idhu yamma, idhai adimai aakki kodumai seivadhudhan Nyama?".
On the whole, the movie is surely a true reminiscence of love. This may not be the best film in the recent times, but this is first of its kind and a predecessor for more quality movies that in future days to come. I sigh off with the lines,
"Paadhai mudindha pinnum, payanam mudiyavillaye...." from one of the songs in the film.
