The Castle Green

Castle Green is one of the most popular historical buildings of Pasadena. The Castle Green was built in 1898 as a part of famous Hotel Green built by Col. George Green. Hotel Green comprised of 3 parts and Castle Green emerged as the second annex. Castle Green was open to public in 1899. Castle Green stands as a proof of history blended with royalty. It has been listed on National Register of Historic Places, the State Historic Register and City of Pasadena's list of Historic Places.

It was built as a lavish resort welcoming people across the world. Architect Frederick I. Roehrig constructed the seven storey Castle Green blending royal styles from Moorish, Spanish and Victorian cultures. It has 97,000 sq ft usable space. Castle Green was the first fireproof building to be constructed in Pasadena with domes, pillars, balconies blended with structural steel. It is often known for sturdy construction way ahead in late 1890s. Castle Green is often referred to as the Central Annex as this occupies the central portion of Hotel Green. It serves as the perfect warm resort to beat the colder temperatures of Pasadena

Castle Green had large ball rooms, dining rooms, gentleman’s smoking salon, a woman's salon, lovely foyers, crystal chandeliers that decorated its interiors. By early 1900s, Hotel green was one the most famous and sought after hotels in Pasadena. Hotel Green became a social centre witnessing bigwigs from different fields. It became home to Tournament of Roses and the Valley Hunt Club.

In 1924, the hotel complex was divided into three parts by investors. Central Annex was divided into fifty individually owned residential apartments to be renamed as Castle Green. Castle Green stands today as a witness of royalty and history blended well. Castle Green’s public rooms are open to people and a number of events happen here throughout the year. It has a bill ball room that can accommodate over 400 people at a time. Many events such as corporate meetings, wedding ceremonies happen here and are the most desired ones in California.

Castle Green has been featured in many Hollywood flicks particularly in ‘The Last Samurai’, ‘the Little Rascals’, ‘Wild at Heart’, ‘We Were Soldiers’, and ‘The Prestige’ and many other television series. Castle Green has stood through ages and constant restoration efforts are made to ensure that this place of royalty never loses its sheen. Annual tours are organized every year by the support arm - Friends of the Castle Green whose main motive is to collect funds for the restoration of its beauty. You can have feel of Castle Green’s royalty by buying a ticket for $20. Entry for children under the age of 12 is absolutely free.
